*This meal was complementary, but all words are honest and my own*
Just before Christmas last year, we were lucky enough to be invited to Hotel Du Vin for the first time, to try out their Christmas Menu.
We really loved the food and the venue, so were really excited to be invited back to try out the new menu they had launched.
Hotel Du Vin is a luxury hotel and bistro in the centre of the Exeter city, where it's historic walled gardens and striking architecture make for the perfect setting for any occasion, grand or small. It also boasts a full spa and pool.
This gloriously grand building used to hold the west of England eye infirmary, and I was a regular visitor as a child with eye issues. There is even still a nod to this inside the hotel, with an old sign still hanging in the hallway.
I went for a classic French Onion Soup as my starter. If you have never had a French onion soup before, then it really is an experience you have to try! A rich onion soup topped with a crouton and lashings of bubbling melted cheese!
Usually a blow torch is used to get the cheese extra melted. I really enjyed it, it was so rich and full of flavour!
My boyfriend went with the Chicken Liver Parfait with Brioche toast and Raisin chutney. It is a classic started, and one that Hotel Du Vin have really managed to pull off. The sweetness of the Brioche is a perfect partner for the smooth parfait.
I had a chicken breast in a rich stew with vegetables. It was a real warming dish, with loads of beans and vegetables to go with the succulent breast.
My only criticism is that it wasn't mentioned on the menu that it would be a breast with a bone in. I actively avoid eating chicken that's served on the bone, and breast more often than not comes without it.
As I side we had a deliciously creamy mashed potato, that was one of the smoothest I have ever eaten! Perfectly flavoured as well.
My boyfriend had a Hotel Du Vin Burger, which is a bacon and cheeseburger served with fries. The fries were skin on and beautifully crispy. As you can see, the burger is a generous size and covered in melted cheesed.
Hotel Du Vin is a great location to enjoy a delicious evening meal, with it's stunning surroundings and spacial dining space.
