*I was invited to take part in the course in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are honest and my own*
As much as I love cooking and run a food blog, my culinary skills have mainly been self taught, and developed with a lot of trial and error. I have been on a few specialist cookery courses since starting my blog, and loved the experience.
Ashburton Cookery School was founded way back in 1992. In 2009 a purpose built facility opened on Old Exeter Road, with world-class training kitchens and facilities.
They offer a huge range of courses, from a few hours to full day courses. They also have the Ashburton Chef Academy, which offers their flagship 6 month Professional Culinary Diploma.
One of their newest style of courses are the 'To go' range. In a fun 3 hour cookery session, the expert chef tutor shows you the steps to cook some of your favourites, using the freshest ingredients. At the end of the course you get to leave with new cookery skills, recipes, and a delicious, packaged take-home dinner for 2 that you made yourself.
I chose the Mexican To Go course, as Mexican is one of my favourite cuisines. The course shows you how to create all of the following dishes:
Spicy Chicken Fajitas
Guacamole
Pico de Galo
Refried beans
Corn tortillas
One of the real luxuries of cooking in a setting like this, is that all the ingredients are ready for you on arrival, all equipment is on hand and washing up is taken care of by a dedicated team.
Everyone had their own station to work in, that had been meticulously set up for us, with everything we need to hand.
We had a book with all the recipes, and were shown each step of the process by our tutor, Rob. He was really engaging, and made everything look really simple. He was also on hand when we were out on our own, and particularly helped me when I was having a tortilla nightmare!
My Pico de Galo (which is basically a salsa) was delicious!
I got to take this whole feast home, and was super proud of my creation. I have never made my own corn tortillas, or guacamole.
My boyfriend and I both really enjoyed tucking into it in the evening, and there was defiantly a lot more than 2 people's worth. We even got sent home with cheese and sour creme, so that we had all the components needed for the Mexican feast!
This course would be great to take part in with friends, or even on your own like I did. I learnt some new skills that I will use the next time I cook anything Mexican, and had a great afternoon out.
The course costs £75 per person, and lasts 3 hours.
Check out all the courses that are on offer on the Ashburton Cookery School website.
