The good British roast dinner, is there anything better than sitting down to one on a Sunday? I have taken pride in my home cooked roasts for years, but sometimes it's nice to enjoy a roast that has been cooked by someone other than me!
Devon is full of wonderful restaurants offering carvery or plated roasts, with lots of fresh local produce. I have often had difficulty in finding where is best to go, so decided to start the hunt to find 'Devon's Best Roast Dinner'.

A little while ago I went on the search for 'Exeter's Best Breakfast', and crowned my very worthy winner, The Daisy Cafe. I scored each venue based on the food, service and atmosphere to crown my winner. I put a shutout on Social Media to hear some of my reader's recommendations, and set about the task of trying them all out- who said that blogging is hard work!
What makes the 'perfect roast dinner' for me?
Succulent meat, lots of fresh veggies, crispy roasted potatoes, thick meaty gravy and a perfect Yorkshire pudding/stuffing etc. It needs to have the correct balance between meat and vegetables, plenty of potatoes and enough gravy for every mouthful.

This week we were treated to a Sunday roast dinner with a Mediterranean twist at Forn in Exeter.
Forn is popular for it's delicious tapas and amazing cocktails, and I have heard some great things about their Sunday roasts.
We visited on a Sunday in February, and were drenched in sunshine from the large windows and garden area. It was warm inside too, so we felt like we really could have been sat somewhere in the Mediterranean.
We were also treated to some live music, which really makes the atmosphere magical when dining. It had a Mediterranean feel, which really helped set the theme.
As well as the roast dinners, they also do 2 for 1 on gin and tonic, so I had to try one of the strawberry gins! My boyfriend had the house gin with bitter lemon. Both were so deliciously refreshing, and the perfect start to our time at Forn.
The starters were all tapas style starters. We had chillies with a sour cream dip as well as a selection of breads with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
The bread was all fresh, crispy and amazing. There was fresh sour dough bread as well as some pittas. The pittas were amazing with the chillies and the sour cream dip.
I loved that the butter had sea salt crumbled on top. A great selection of food to tantalise our taste buds!
We both went for roasts beef for our main. The roasts are severed plated, but the vegetables are served separately. I really like this as it gives you full control over how many or how little veggies you want to have on your plate.
There was a carrot and parsnip mix, cabbage with crispy bacon and an amazing cauliflower cheese. The cauli cheese and a crispy crumb topping with gave it an amazing finish and crunch.
The gravy was so gloriously meaty and rich, it was possibly the best gravy I have ever had. At first I thought the potatoes looked a little overcooked, but they were actually so crispy and amazing.
The meat was literally melt in the mouth cooked, and the Yorkshire pudding was perfect.
Food ***** Atmosphere ***** Service *****
